Services
Research
Your book, true and substantiated.
Web archives, old and rare newspaper clippings, reverse-engineering references, interviews, contact information, photo research and permissions, fact-checking, contextual research: these, and more, are the kinds of things I work with each day.
Whether you can’t remember where you heard that quote that’s vaguely in your head, or you can’t find everything you want to find about your subject, I’m a relentless researcher. My approach is investigative: I follow the thread until the end.
Most of the books I research fall into the categories of history, biography, international affairs, memoir, and the arts, but I love the versatility that research skills afford, so I can pivot to fit your research needs.
Developmental editing
A second set of eyes.
You’ll send me a full draft of your manuscript or proposal and I’ll send you a reader’s report with suggestions on structure, narrative, argument, characterization, and themes. I’ll also ask questions that your readers won’t have to.
Line editing
In a line edit, I will consider word choice, voice, and concision and work with you to make your style the best that it can be.
Book Coaching
No author has ever done it alone.
Feeling a little lost? Whether you’re publishing for the first time and have questions about navigating the labyrinth that is the publishing process, or you’re an experienced author who needs more structure, my approach to book coaching is a blend of cheerleading, discipline, and editing.
No matter what stage you’re at in the writing process, we’ll get on the phone or Zoom weekly, biweekly, or monthly, and talk out your hopes and concerns about the book. I’ll listen to what you have to say, suggest strategies to keep you moving, and, most importantly, guide you to practice healthy habits to make yourself become a better writer.
Do you write better when you talk? We’ll record our conversation so you can refer back to it when you put pen to paper. Do you need a writing schedule? We’ll work together to make a progress plan that keeps you on track for as long as you’d like, including until publication. Need deadlines to keep you writing? You’ll send me drafts of chapters or chunks weekly, biweekly, or monthly, and I’ll make edits that help you to strip away words you don’t need, and add words you do. Writer’s block? I’ll work with you to find concrete ways to keep you writing – and writing well.
Proofreading
Almost ready to go to press? In this final step before publication, I will take a keen eye to your manuscript and make sure there are no spelling mistakes, repetitions, or errors of any kind.
